Angel's Trumpet Identified

We have a winner!! Midge Tucker has correctly identified the flower posted on July 2nd as an Angel's Trumpet - or Datura. Bufflehead Cove Inn, in Kennebuckport, Maine has a deck with several containers of these spectacular plants in full flower. As they're tropical plants, they probably have to be sheltered from the Maine winters.

Congratulations, Midge.

Trip to Morningstar Perennials

On Thursday, July 14th, members of the Garden Club caravaned to Morningstar Perennials in Rockingham. While the weather didn't totally co-operate, we found it to be an interesting and charming experience. The owner and gardener-extraordinaire, Laurie (below), showed us her vast array of old, new, and unusual perennials (many of which have found their way to our gardens!).

The meeting was chaired by Barbara Whittaker (Maria is on vacation), and we discussed the various projects proposed by the Beautification Committee. It was decided to decorate the downtown area of Ludlow for the fall season - probably with corn stalks and other fall motifs. Marie Hasson graciously volunteered to coordinate this - and will need other volunteers!!! The second project will be to make new Christmas decorations for the Library Tree. Everyone agreed that an October workshop for this project would be great fun.

When the rains came, we thanked Laurie, hoped to come back and browse more thoroughly, and headed home.

"MESSAGE TO THE LUDLOW PLANT THIEVES"

Volunteers from both Ludlow Streetscapes and Ludlow Garden Club have built us new homes, given us healthy soil to live in, planted us with TLC and provide us with regular nourishment so we can display our beautiful colors and make people smile as they pass by.

Now YOU - whoever you are - are taking us away from this wonderful environment. Please consider our feelings ... we don't hurt anyone ... we just want to stay in our home for all to enjoy.

Thank You, Ludlow Bridge Flower Box Residents

July Garden Club Trip

The July trip for the Club will be to Morningstar Perennials in Rockingham, on Thursday, the 14th. This is an interesting and eclectic garden, where she grows most of her own perennials. We can meet at Shaw's at 11:45 to carpool (the gardens are off of Rte. 5, shortly after the entrance to Rte. 91); bring a sandwich and chair. To view the inventory of plants that Laurie grows, go to http://www.morningstarflowers.com/images/morningstar_plantlist.pdf.

Natural Beauty Along Maine Byways

Pictured above is one of the many scenes along Maine highways and byways at this time of year, the naturally growing lupines found in northern and western Maine.
